Earth Science - 8th Grade 
September 20th-24th

Monday

  • Practice measuring and following directions as they create quadrants.
  • Measure and record the compaction of soil to determine how much space is available for air and water.
  • Measure and record how long it takes water to soak into the soil at the selected field site, and then use these data to infer the degree of compaction of the soil.

Assignment:  Set up quadrant in order to accurately compare data.  Complete compaction and percolation tests.

Tuesday
  • Collect a soil sample from the field site.

Assignment:  Observations of soil.

Wednesday
  • Look for, identify, and count the organisms found in soil samples from the field site.

Assignment:  Organism data table.

Thursday
  • Classify plants and animals that they observed in local habitats according to similarities and differences

  • Investigate the interrelationships of the plants and animals living in a specific habitat

  • Compile data gathered through investigation in order to record and present results.

Assignment:  Build a Berlese funnel.

Friday
  • Look for, identify, and count the organisms found in soil samples from the field site.
  • Determine the composition of a soil sample by separating the soil particles into layers. Students will then classify the soil as sand, silt, or clay.

Assignment:  Mud shake.
